Yesterday, I opened the email from the BSFA (British Science Fiction Association) to see that TWO of my works have made the shortlist for the BSFA Awards! Wow!
My First Shortlisted Works
I’ve never been shortlisted for any literary awards before, so I was over the moon and stars to be shortlisted twice. The two shortlisted works are: THE INN AT THE AMETHYST LANTERN (written as J. Dianne Dotson and published by Android Press in 2023), nominated for younger fiction, and “Copper” in INTERZONE Issue 295 (written as Jendia Gammon and published in 2023), nominated for short fiction.
Long after a climate catastrophe, when a utopian future faces an unearthed evil from our present, Gentian “Gen” Lightworth and her friends in the night-living town of Glimmerbight must stop the past from repeating itself by using all their wits and talents…and perhaps a bit of magic.
A touching story, “Copper” is about a near-future robot who develops an interesting ability after his person undergoes tremendous grief.
What Happens Now?
The BSFA Awards ceremony takes place at Eastercon (this year’s is called Levitation), on Easter weekend, in the U.K. Voting by BSFA members and convention attendees ends March 29, 2024.
If I do not attend, my husband Gareth L. Powell, who also has a work shortlisted for the awards, will accept on my behalf, should I win either prize.
A Great Honor
It’s a great honor to be nominated for these works and I thank everyone who did so. I am also humbled to be alongside so many remarkable writers, my peers, so brilliant and unique and vibrant, and so important to the genre.
